About the CDT

The CDT in Compound Semiconductor Manufacturing started in 2019-20, welcoming its first intake of seven students who have organised this event.  The CDT is funded for five annual intakes and expects to support 65 students over the period.

Led by Cardiff University, this CDT is an alliance of four universities, Cardiff, UCL and the Universities of Sheffield and Manchester, as well as 24 companies, many already working closely together via the EPSRC Future CS Manufacturing Hub, with established excellence in CS disciplines.

The first year programme is designed to provide a solid foundation in compound semiconductor physics or electronics, depending on student background, as well as an overview of the CS research underway in the four Universities and an understanding of CS manufacturing.  Students can explore their interests before selecting a project part-way through the first year, and then undertake an MSc project to build their skills before starting the PhD project, formally, in the second year.  All of the projects will have industrial relevance, and many are supported by our industrial partners.
